What this tool does
Finds and checks your XML sitemap: how many URLs it lists, whether it is a single sitemap or an index of several, and common problems such as http URLs and duplicates.
Give it your site's address and it looks for /sitemap.xml, or paste the sitemap's own URL. For a sitemap index it reads the first 5 child sitemaps, and it shows up to 1,000 of the URLs it found.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my sitemap matter?
It tells search engines which pages exist and should be crawled. A sitemap with broken, duplicate or http URLs wastes crawl attention and can leave new pages undiscovered for longer.
- Why does it only read 5 child sitemaps?
A sitemap index can point to hundreds of sitemaps. Reading the first 5 is enough to check it is set up correctly without crawling your whole site, and the result says when there were more.
- Should every page be in my sitemap?
Every page you want indexed, yes. Leave out pages you have set to noindex, redirects and duplicates.
- Is it free, and do you store anything?
Yes it's free. We do not save the page or the result. We fetch the address you give, check it, and show you what we found. We keep a record that the tool ran (when, and your IP address to prevent abuse).
